Un Peu de Français à Pondicherry

This past weekend, I traveled 8 hours east to the cute little coastal town of Pondicherry in the state of Tamil Nadu. Famous for its French influence (it is a former French colony) and Auroville international community, Pondicherry is a laid-back relaxing getaway. It doesn’t provide the kind of paradise that most people look for in beach towns, but I liked the non-touristy feel of the place – instead of bikini-clad foreigners sunbathing, in Pondicherry you find local fisherman pulling in the morning catch and Indian families lazing in front of the sea. Some areas of the city do still retain remnants of its French past and I loved being able to speak French with the locals, but don’t go there expecting a mini-Paris…Pondicherry is still very much Indian at heart.
